What's New August 1997

PLANET observations for 1997

Regular PLANET observations for the 1997 Galactic bulge season are almost complete. The optical astronomy group at the University of Tasmania had a fairly intensive observing timetable during the season, and the good news is that several very interesting sources were observed, with the most promising being MB-97-41. Look out for the upcoming Science article (preliminary reference is Science, vol. 277, 8th August 1997, p 755).

For more information about this and other events, see the PLANET Current Events 1997 page.

Below is the observing timetable for the Mt. Canopus observatory for August.

Upgrade of computers and network at Mt. Canopus

Thanks to the amazing efforts of Kym Hill we now have a network connection and a small subnet at Mt. Canopus. A new PC running Linux has been installed in the workroom; this PC is fitted with a modem and a PPP link to the University can be initiated simply by typing ppp-start at the prompt. This script will automatically dial into the University and connect via PPP. The new PC (called bok) is now also connected to the ST6 control computer via a standard ethernet cable. The ST6 computer can read and write directories on bok simply by typing NFS at the C:\ prompt. You will be prompted for a username and a password. The directory /data will then automatically be mounted on the ST6 computer as drive G:\ and it is possible to save the images which are taken during the night on this drive. At the end of the night all the images can then be ftp'd back to the University.
