Geometry and Physics:

From Newton to Einstein and beyond

by  Professor Gerd Rudolph

Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Leipzig, Germany

8:00PM, Thursday, May 30, 2002
Physics Lecture Theatre 1

Sandy Bay Campus, University of Tasmania

Professor Gerd Rudolph gained his PhD in mathematical physics at the University of Warsaw in 1980, and is currently Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Leipzig. Professor Rudolph has been working for many years on geometric, group-theoretical and topological methods in application to classical and quantum field theory. In 2001 Professor Rudolph was elected an Honorary von Humboldt Fellow by the Polish Foundation of Science. His visit to Hobart is supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Leipzig (the capital city of the state of Saxony) has had a proud history in physics since the foundation of its University in 1409. Birthplace of Leibniz, Leipzig has also been associated with the work of such physicists as Boltzmann, Debye, and Heisenberg.

In his talk Prof.  Rudolph will give a glimpse of theoretical physics using familiar concepts of geometry
